The Ultimate Kuala Lumpur-Singapore Vacation Leave: First Sightseeing in Singapore

This is the fifteenth part of our 6-days-5-nights Ultimate KL-Singapore Vacation Leave.

Bugis Street

We left the hotel at around 6:00pm and our initial plan was to get some dinner and then go to Gardens by the Bay. We got to explore a bit of the Bugis area because we got lost looking for a money changer haha. Bugis is huge! And there are a lot of things to do and places to visit. If you have the time, you could opt to do a walking tour around the area. But for us, we just walked across Liang Seah St. to the end and then when we saw a mall, we went inside and looked for something to eat haha. Turns out, the mall is the Bugis Junction. This mall is located at Victoria Street, Middle Road and North Bridge Road in Bugis. It consists of a shopping mall, an office tower, and the Intercontinental Singapore Hotel. Just across it is the famous Bugis Street, which has lots and lots of "tiangge" like stalls selling all kinds of stuffs, souvenirs, clothes, shoes, bags, etc. It's like the Divisoria/Baclaran of Singapore. Anyway, we got to explore Bugis Junction a bit, there's a legit money changer somewhere inside so you could have your money changed there. But what we won't forget is this amazing ramen restaurant in the basement called Menya Musashi Takatora. You order your food using the provided iPad thing, and then in just 15minutes, you have your hot ramen in front of you. One order costs 17SGD and it is good for 2 people already. It was very tasty and worth the price. So if you find yourself in this mall, try out this ramen resto!

The cool iPad where you can place your orders

Very yummy ramen!

After our sumptuous dinner, we walked towards the Bugis MRT to get to Marina Bay Sands/Garden by the Bay. The Singapore Train Line is very very easy to use. They have signs all over, and of course, online maps of the different train stations. And in each station, there are maps posted in the walls showing you the surrounding area and where to exit if you want to go to a particular area. It's very convenient because sometimes there are multiple exits in one station. And of course, don't forget to load up your tap and go card, and just tap away!

HOW TO GET TO MARINA BAY SANDS/GARDENS BY THE BAY FROM BUGIS:
  • Take the Downtown Line Bugis Station going towards Chinatown.
  • Get off at the Promenade Station which is just 1 station away.
  • Transfer to the Circle Line and take the train going towards Marina Bay.
  • Marina Bay is just 2 stations away from the Promenade Station. Alight there.

The tap gates hehe

English and helpful signs everywhere!

Very clean Singapore train

Promenade Station. The walls of each station has different designs so that's pretty cool

Each train also has a mini map showing you the stations the train would be passing thru

Our destination!

We exited thru the one where you would be right beside the Gardens by the Bay. Unfortunately (and this is our 3rd mishap for this day!), we arrived at around 8:00pm and the Flower Dome and Cloud Forest located inside the gardens closes at 9:00pm, so we decided not to go there. Also, the shuttle around the gardens closes at around 9:00pm as well. You can explore the outdoor gardens until 2:00am, however, you have to do it by foot since there are no more available shuttles. The entrance to the outdoor garden is free. We opted to just go up the bridge seen there and take pictures of the SuperTree Grove and the amazing structure of the Marina Bay Sands. We decided to just return there probably on our last day so that we could explore the area better. Anyway, we still enjoyed the view and the lights which were amazing! The Marina Bay Sands at night is just a huge towering beautiful building! After some picture taking, we decided to go thru Marina Bay Sands and explore the area ahead.

SuperTree Grove

The amazing Marina Bay Sands!

Scarily towering over us

Marina Bay Sands is an integrated resort fronting the Marina Bay in Singapore. Inside it is The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands mall, which is a very high-end mall with a canal running through it like the Venetian Mall in Macau, a museum, some theatres, a lot of expensive stores and restaurants, and a casino. At the top of the Marina Bay Sands is the SkyPark which has the world's longest elevated swimming pool. It also has restaurants, gardens, and an observatory area wherein you can see the views of the Singapore skyline. Of course, since it was already a bit late, we weren't able to explore the area, we just passed through it to go to the area where you would be able to see the Esplanade, the helix bridge, etc. Our original plan was to walk towards the Merlion statue, but when we got there, we realized it was a looooong walk, so plan scrapped! Which brings us to our 4th and last mishap for this day. We then decided to go to Orchard Road to explore the area there since we didn't want to go back to the hotel just yet.

Elegant inside of the Marina Bay Sands

A portion of The Shoppes at Marina Bay

Semi Singapore Skyline

After resting a bit, we walked back towards the Marina Bay station to board the train to go to Orchard Road. By the way, the walk from the MRT to the Marina Bay Sands is a long walk! You have to go through a very luxurious looking hotel, past a long bridge, and then up the Marina Bay Sands, across it, to go to the area where you could see the views. So, yeah, we had to walk back up that direction so just imagine how tired we were haha. Tempers were running a bit high at that time.

HOW TO GO TO ORCHARD ROAD FROM MARINA BAY:
  • Alight at the Marina Bay Station and take the North South line heading to Jurong East.
  • Get off the Orchard Station which is just 5 stations away.

And since it was around 10pm, the malls around the Orchard Road area were already closed! No ice cream vendors, no malls, nothing hahaha. And here's our last mishap for the day! So we just decided to call it a night and go back to our hotel to rest up. We were able to walk towards Newton Station (we have no idea how!) and we alighted the Downtown Line heading towards Chinatown and got off the Bugis Station which is 3 stations away. And that's our first day in Singapore! Read on for our 2nd day, and a much improved day at that!

The Ultimate Kuala Lumpur-Singapore Vacation Leave: First Mishap in Bugis Singapore

This is the fourteenth part of our 6-days-5-nights Ultimate KL-Singapore Vacation Leave.

Bugis Area

We decided to stay at the Bugis Area because, according to other blogs we read, it's the largest street-shopping location in Singapore. Plus, the hotels around the area are cheaper. We reserved a room for two at the Beach Hotel which, I think costs around less than 3000php for 3 days, but I just couldn't remember the exact price. The Beach Hotel is situated at the junction of Beach Road and Liang Seah Street, which is within the "Food District" of Singapore, and it is just a 2-minute walk from the Bugis MRT. So from Changi Airport, we headed straight to Bugis to check-in, leave our bags, and finally, explore Singapore!

HOW TO GO TO BUGIS FROM CHANGI AIRPORT:
  • Take the East West Line (Green Line) of Changi Airport.
  • 2 stops after alight at Tanah Merah station.
  • Go west bound (line heading to Joo Koon) and alight at Bugis MRT Station which is 8 stops from Tanah Merah

From the MRT, you can walk towards Beach Hotel but it's a bit confusing especially if it's your first time there since the area is pretty large. But it's also not that tiring to walk because you get to see a lot of things while walking around. However, in our circumstance, we needed to walk very fast because when we got off the MRT, the sky was really dark and it looks like it was going to rain. And sure enough, it did, so we had to run all the way towards Beach Hotel pulling our luggages, we really looked crazy hahaha. So that's our first mishap in Bugis, and there's another to come! But first, here's how to get to Beach Hotel from the Bugis MRT (according to Google Maps):
  • Exit the Bugis MRT Station thru Victoria St, just follow the signs or check the map located in the MRT station, very convenient as to know where to exit.
  • Once you find the exit at Victoria St., turn right towards Rochor Road. You will know it's towards Rochor Road if you see the Bugis Junction up ahead, go towards it.
  • At the corner, turn left at Rochor Road. Then just walk straight ahead, about 500meters.
  • When you see the Beach Road, turn right at that road and walk straight ahead.
  • Turn right at Liang Seah St. and just at the corner is Beach Hotel. You would know you're in Liang Seah if you see a number of dimsum restaurants and a huge ramen buffet restaurant and if I'm not mistaken, the name of the restaurant is Zhong Hua Steamboat. Beside it is the entrance to Beach Hotel. Check out the pictures below of the direction we walked to to get to Beach Hotel.

Rain rain go away!

So yeah, it was an easy walk, unfortunately, it started to rain pretty hard when we were on the Beach Road area so we had to run all the way towards Beach Hotel so you could see it's a bit of a long run. So when we got to the hotel, we were just really excited to check-in, freshen up a bit, rest for a little while. But then, the second mishap happened. When we got to the reception area, the lady there told us that they had to give away our reserved room because we weren't answering our phone when they were calling us to confirm our arrival. They. Gave. Away. Our. Room. Of course, we couldn't answer our phones because we were at Kuala Lumpur when they were calling us and our phones were placed in airplane mode to avoid extra charges. And to top it all off, they had no more available rooms for us to check into. WHAT! The next available room would be a day from now. WTH! Let me just inform you, when we reserved the room, they didn't charge us any reservation fee so the room was not yet paid, but the hassle of knowing that you have no room to stay in, in a foreign place, it is just a really stressful situation. Add the really hard pouring rain outside and it's triple the stressful situation. Fortunately, the lady at the reception desk was a bit helpful, she called the hotel beside them if they still have available rooms, and luckily, they have a room for two available for today. So we just had to transfer to the other hotel, however, the rain was really really pouring really hard so we had to wait a good 30minutes to an hour at the Beach Hotel entrance just so we could transfer to the 85 Beach Garden Hotel located beside it. Good thing we still had 1 Mcdo burger from KL to munch on while waiting. So, finally, after about an hour, the rain let down a bit and we hastily transferred to 85 Beach Garden Hotel. And then, another good luck on our side, the room rate was cheaper (but I couldn't remember how much), so instead of staying just one night and then transferring back to Beach Hotel, we opted to stay here for the whole 4 days of our stay in Singapore. The room was small, like really small, from the entrance there's a queen size bed and then right beside it is the CR already, separated by only a thin glass door hahaha. And then beside the room door is the sink and the TV, that's it. Very very basic, but still, it has aircon, cable TV, and a slow wifi so it was OK for us.

The comfortable bed

In front of the bed is the door and this small area

Beside the door is this sink

The toilet/shower area

After all those unfortunate events, we were still feeling very blessed because of this wonderful trip to Singapore. So after freshening up and resting a bit, we headed off to explore Bugis and other areas of Singapore, which is a bit of a mishap still hahaha so read on for more!

The Ultimate Kuala Lumpur-Singapore Vacation Leave: The Amazing Changi International Airport

This is the thirteenth part of our 6-days-5-nights Ultimate KL-Singapore Vacation Leave.

First glimpse of Changi Airport

Changi International Airport is probably the best airport we've ever been to. Granted, we haven't been to many places, but comparing it to HK or KL airport, Singapore is on the top of our list. It's not just an airport, it's like a many carnival or mall wherein you can do a lot of things, best part is, most of it is for free. And another great thing about this airport, it has free internet! Anyway, Changi Airport has 3 terminals all connected to each other by the Skytrain. This service is open from 5:00am to 2:30 am, and it takes only approximately 4 minutes to travel between terminals, with an average waiting time of 2 minutes. Amazing! Just follow the signs leading you to the Skytrain, you won't miss it. You can also transfer between terminals by foot, specifically by inter-terminal travellators located throughout the Departure Transit areas, but, why would you when you have the very convenient Skytrain at your beck and call hahaha. But, if you find yourself at Changi Airport between 2:30am to 5:00am when the Skytrain is closed, you can opt to take the free shuttle bus service which operates between these hours at 15 minutes interval. Here are the boarding and alighting points for the shuttle bus service:
  • Terminal 1: Departure Check-in Hall, Level 2, Door 5
  • Terminal 2: Arrival Hall, Level 1, Door 2
  • Terminal 3: Departure Check-in Hall, Level 2, Door 8

And for your convenience, here's a downloadable map showing where the Skytrain, walkalators, and shuttle bus services are located, just click on the pic to get a clearer and better picture

Our flight to Singapore from Kuala Lumpur was a bit uneventful. The flight took about an hour and it was a very smooth ride. We arrived at Changi Airport Terminal 1 at around 1:40pm and went through immigration without any hitch. In one of the exits from the immigration, you could see a lot of maps of different places in Singapore, it's for free, so don't forget to take as many as you want, it is very helpful! As I've said previously, Changi Airport has 3 terminals, and if you have the time to spare, try to explore each and every one of these terminals as there are a lot of facilities, services, attractions, etc in each terminals. We had a bit of a time to spare so we tried to explore as best as we could. I'll try to enumerate in this blog the services and attractions seen per terminal, but in reality, we weren't able to explore all because the airport is just too big for just an hour or 2 of exploring! Maybe next time though.

The convenient Skytrain

We hope NAIA would have these trains (wishful thinking)

First off, Terminal 1. The famous attractions seen in this terminal are the following:
  • The Cactus Garden
This garden features more than 100 species of cacti and arid plants from the deserts and dry areas of Asia, Africa and America. There is also a bar within the garden where you can just sit back, relax, and drink while waiting for your flight. It is located at the Departure Transit Lounge, Level 3, Transit Area.

  • Kinetic Rain
It is located at the Departure Check-in Hall, Public Area. It features 1,216 bronze droplets which forms 16 different shapes in a slow, fluid movement.

  • Piazza Garden
This garden features seasonal and thematic plant displays throughout the seasons. It is seen at the Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2, Transit Area

  • Sculptural Tree Garden
It features three tree-like sculptures clad with a collage of foliage, and around it, there is a raised walkways which you can walk to to view the tree closer and better. It is located at Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2, Transit Area

  • Swimming Pool with Jacuzzi
It is located at Aerotel Airport Transit Hotel and it features a rooftop pool, plus a jacuzzi with bar and shower facilities. It costs 17SGD per person and operates from 6:00am to 12:00midnight. If you are a guest in the transit hotel, these facilities are free.

  • The Social Tree
It a 9 meter tall interactive installation wherein you can share or store your photos or videos on this memory capsule-like thing. You can attach your photos or videos in the touch-screen photo booths around the "tree". It is located at Central Piazza, right after immigration counters, Transit Area.

  • Water Lily Garden
This garden features, well, water lilies in a natural aquatic garden environment. Located at Departure Transit Lounge Level 2, Transit Area.
These are just the unique attraction in this terminal. All terminals also features pay lounges, free rest areas where you can sleep, convenience stores, baggage storage, money changers, spa services, computers where you can use their free internet, and so much more!

Once you get tired of Terminal 1 (which is highly unlikely), take the Skytrain to transfer to Terminal 2 and continue your exploration there. The famous attractions seen in this terminal are the following:
  • Enchanted Garden
It is an interactive garden that comes to life with sight and sound while you walk through the garden. Motion sensors trigger sounds of nature and blooming flowers, with various sparkling lights. This is located at Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2, Transit Area.

  • Entertainment Deck
Now this, we really looked for this during our departure from Singapore and it did not disappoint! It has Xbox 360/Playstation 3 and Kinect stations, there's a movie theater, and an MTV booth. What! It is located at Departure Transit Lounge, next to the Sunflower Garden, Level 3, Transit Area.

  • Orchid Garden
The Orchid Garden features more than 700 orchids of 30 species grouped by their various colours and shapes, representing the 4 elements of nature – Earth, Water, Fire and Air. It is located at Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2, Transit Area.

  • Orchid Garden
  • Movie Theatre
It's for free! And it's an actual movie theatre. It is located at both Terminal 2 and 3 and is open for 24 hours.

  • Xperience Zone
If a movie theatre is not enough, nor is a gaming room, there's also this area. It has large TV screens with plush seats where you can watch the latest sport events, get creative with the e-Postcard booth and share it with your friends and family via email.

  • Xperience Zone

    Comfy lounge chair all around!
  • Sunflower Garden
The garden features several varieties of sunflowers grown in Changi Airport's very own nursery. Located at Departure Transit Lounge, Level 3, Transit Area.
Terminal 2 is also where the train to the City is located, we will go back to that later on.

Terminal 2

Next and final Terminal is the Terminal 3. What we noticed about terminal 3 is it is were a lot of various sculptures and art thingies are located. Compared to Terminal 1 and 2, these terminal has a lot of art works all around. I won't be going into specifics for each sculptures, but nevertheless, they are beautiful and very picture-worthy. Anyway, here are the famous attractions found in Terminal 3:
  • Butterfly Garden
It houses about 1,000 tropical butterflies from as many as 40 species during the different seasons of the year. Educational corners and individual enclosures let you witness the breeding and feeding of butterflies at close range. It is located at Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2 & 3, Transit Area.

  • TV Lounge
Just because we weren't contented with the Movie Theatre or the gaming area, we just have to have a TV Lounge to top it all off. Located at Departure Transit Lounge, Level 2, Transit Area.

  • The Slide @ T3
This is dubbed as the world's tallest slide found inside an airport. It is 12 meters high or 4 storeys tall. You can ride this slide for every 10SGD spent at Changi Airport in a single same day receipt and a maximum of 10 rides per receipt can be redeemed on the same day. It is located at the Arrival Hall, Level 1, Public Area ad is open from 12:00pm to 10:30pm daily.
This is just the tip of the iceberg. There are still a lot of attractions and sites to visit all around Changi Airport. For us, I think you have to spend at least half a day to visit them all. Unfortunately, we only had 2 hours to go around and then we needed to go to Bugis to check-in our hotel. So, back to regular programming!

Going to the city from the airport is actually quite easy. But first, do not forget to buy the famous "EZ Link Card". It will make your public transport in Singapore a whole lot easier. You can use this in all of their trains and buses, you can just reload it, or in Singapore term, "top up" in the various train stations and other convenience store. Very very easy and very convenient to use.

Reloading Machine for the EZ Link Card

Very easy to use, and it has english translation so yehey!

Now once you've got all the essentials you need and you're done exploring the Changi Airport, head over to Terminal 2 using the Skytrain or just walk to Terminal 2 and follow the signs that says "Train to City" because that's where you're headed. Go down the very long escalator, tap your EZ Link Card, and go through the gates to the train station headed to the city. Take the East West Line (Green Line) of Changi Airport and the after 2 stops, alight at the Tanah Merah Station and board the train going WEST bound. Be careful, because the other line will bring you to the end of Pasir Ris, that's not where the city is obviously haha. From the Tanah Merah Station, Bugis Station is just 8 stations away. So just relax, take in the view of Singapore, and just enjoy the ride. The train line of Singapore is one of the easiest to understand, and of course, one of the nicest looking trains. It's spacious, it's clean, and it's quiet. While riding the train, you would notice that there are areas where there will suddenly be some baricades of walls blocking your view. These are the residential areas of Singapore and the wall is there to keep the white walkers away, nah kidding, it's to keep their privacy. Very very cool. Also, one thing we noticed, if the station would be alighting in a mall area, it would be underground. If you would be alighting in a residential area, the station would be above ground. Just a few reflections we had while riding the train hahaha.

Signs are all over the airport so you won't get lost, probably haha.

The long escalator going down the train to the city

Signs are also seen in the trains, take the East West Line going to Tanah Merah

The train station in the airport, very busy

Inside the train. Very spacious so you won't have any problem bringing your luggage aboard

Once at Tanah Merah Station, look for the sign that says going towards Joo Koon. This is where you will alight to get to Bugis Station

Other ways to go to the city from Changi Airport:
  • Public Bus
If you opt to take the bus service, take the bus 36/36A to go the city. The first bus arrives at 6:00am and the last trip leaves just before 12:00 midnight. The fare costs around 2.50SGD and the ride takes about an hour. The bus stops are conveniently located in the basement bus buys of all the 3 terminals. If you have an EZ Link Card, you can use it here, but if you don't have the card, be sure to prepare the exact fare because no change will be given.

  • Taxi
If you have the money to spare and just want to relax all the way to your hotel, take the taxis. Taxi stands are available at all Arrival levels of the three terminals. The ride to the city takes about 30 minutes and would cost you around 20SGD to 40SGD. It is a meter fare but there are additional Airport surcharges for trips coming from the airport. If you take the taxi from 5:00pm to midnight, there is a 5SGD airport surcharge, in other times, there is a 3SGD surcharge. Surcharge are also higher during peak hours and midnight.

After about 30minutes or probably less, we finally arrived at Bugis. Read on for our first Singapore mishap that involves our hotel, and a really strong pouring rain. Up next!

The Ultimate Kuala Lumpur-Singapore Vacation Leave: Bye Malaysia, Hello Singapore!

This is the twelfth part of our 6-days-5-nights Ultimate KL-Singapore Vacation Leave.

For our last day in Malaysia, we decide to take another trip at the amazing Petronas Twin Towers so we could see them during the daytime. We are just obsessed with this tower! So again, we boarded the Kalana Jaya Line towards the Gombak direction, and got off the KLCC station, which was just 5 stations away. Very easy! In less than 30 minutes, we finally got to see the famous towers in broad daylight! We went to the other side of the towers, not the side where Suria KLCC was. But the view is just still so very pretty!

The garden side near the towers

You can see the KL tower from here!

Majestic at night, beautiful at daytime!

I don't think I'll get tired of taking pictures of you pretty tower

After the amazing morning with the towers, we headed back to the hotel to check-out. Again, take the Kelana Jaya Line, this time towards the KL Sentral direction, and get off there. We bought some fast breakfast at the station, we were able to find this coffee shop called Old Town, which is famous all around KL, and it is because their coffee is just amazing! We also had some sandwiches from the Subway we saw, it was also very nice. Anyway, this is the first time we were able to ride KL's train that wasn't night time so we were able to see clearly the views from the train. There were a lot of construction going on, but still, KL is a beautiful city. Not as clean as Singapore, but still cleaner than Manila hahaha. What was distinct about the city was that there were a lot of trees and parks in the middle of the highway, so that was a really nice thing to see.

Very clear and easy to understand signs at the train station

Beautiful highways all around

Equally beautiful parks as well

Checking out was very easy, there were no additional charges. Which was such a good luck, because, I forgot to write about this, remember the very cheap wall adapter I bought at Central Market? So we left J's phone plugged into thatat adapter, and in the middle of the night last night, I was suddenly woken up by a very loud boom, and at the corner of my eye I saw a spark and a flash of light at the wall where the phone was plugged in. And then, I suddenly realised that there was no power in our room. Apparently, the cheap wall adapter exploded and affected our whole room! So we called up the front desk, unfortunately, the engineer in charge was a long way from the hotel so it took about 3-4 hours before he arrived. Imagine our fear and our hardship trying to talk in english with all the staffs there hahaha. So I really thought they were going to charge us for that, but luckily, they didn't. Or maybe they forgot about it? Owell who knows! So that was our adventure that happened at our last night in KL hahaha.

After checking out, we brought a few supplies at the convenience store in front of the hotel. I bought a new wall adapter, not cheap this time. So for our ride going to KLIA, we decided to try out the bus. The bus station is located under the KL Sentral, so after crossing towards the mall, go down and go towards the basement. There are, I think, 2 different bus stations there. We chose the Sky Bus line and it costs RM11 (125php) per person, so it was way cheaper then the train to KLIA. It took around 1 1/2 hour to arrive at the airport, but the bus was comfortable, the seats were a bit soft, so you could sleep all the way to the airport.

There's no difference between the buses, so choose whatever hehe./center>

Bus schedules

Purchase tickets here

The interior of the bus

The flight we purchased was via Air Asia, and the time of departure was 12:40pm. We were able to check-in online so we weren't in a hurry so much. We explored the airport slightly, or well, we were lost that's why we were able to explore haha. Another hurdle was that our luggage which we were supposed to check-in exceeded the weight limit so we had to open up our bags in the airport and tried to lessen the weight of our luggages, and in doing so, our carry-on became heavier. So, a word of advise, double check your luggages weight before going to the airport. The KLIA is huge, and very clean. There are a lot of stores all around, it's kind of like a mall. There are also signs everywhere, so it would be easy for you to find your way. Immigration went through like a breeze, and inside, there are also a lot of stores, there's also duty free. And a variety of stores selling foods. We bought a McDonalds so we could eat something before boarding. Anyway, our plane arrived on time and then we're off to Singapore!

Lots of different designs all around the airport

The way to immigration

Walking time advisory. Very cool.

Lots of stores beyond immigration

Lots of stores beyond immigration

Really nice and comfortable waiting area

So that ends our trip to Kuala Lumpur. KL is quite similar to Manila, it has places which are very clean, but there are also areas which looks a bit shady and a bit dirty. But overall, the place is still beautiful. The roads are very smooth, there are so many high buildings which was really pretty. Transportation was a breeze, the train lines passes through a lot of tourist spots, and they're also a cheap way to get around KL. The people are nice, although, some of them didn't know how to speak English so it was a bit hard to ask for directions. There were also a lot of Indians working in stores all over the place. But, still the people are nice, it felt like a safe place. We really enjoyed exploring KL, and would probably go back to Malaysia to explore other areas.
