The Ultimate Kuala Lumpur-Singapore Vacation Leave: Arrival At KL

This is the second part of our 6-days-5-nights Ultimate KL-Singapore Vacation Leave.

Our flight to Kuala Lumpur was scheduled at 2:10pm via Cebu Pacific Flight 5J 499 at Terminal 3. We arrived at the airport at around 11:30am and headed straight to the Cebu Pacific station. Checking in was easy, after which we had to pay the usual Travel Tax of 1,620php/person before getting the plane tickets from the counter. And then another 550php/person for the International Terminal Fee prior to entering the immigration counter. Once inside, get the Immigration Counter form and fill it up. Important note: to avoid the hassle, bring your own black ballpen! After filling up, fall in line at the immigration counter and wait your turn. Another important note: Do not take pictures inside the immigration area and prepare all necessary documents like passports, flight tickets, etc.

Side note, it was election time in the Philippines the day we left. J was able to vote, I wasn't able to due to long lines. Boo!

We arrived at Kuala Lumpur International Airport at around 6:00pm. Luckily, the flight was uneventful and we went through immigrations like a breeze (unlike our HK trip, if you haven't read our post and you're curious what happened to us at HK immigration, please click on the link on the right side and have a few laugh haha).

Kuala Lumpur International Airport (or KLIA) is a nice airport, very clean, although not as big as Singapore or Hong Kong airport, but nonetheless, it was a nice place. According to Wikipedia, the airport is located approximately 45 kilometre south of Kuala Lumpur City Center so it's a bit far from the city. But, still, very accessible as they have multiple ways of going in and out of the airport. Also, don't get confused by their acronyms, etc. For example, the airport is KLIA, inside KLIA is KLIA 2 which is the low-cost carrier terminal at KLIA. This was formerly known as LCCT (or the Low-cost carrier terminal). This is usually where Air Asia airplanes or flight is located. It is located 2 kilometres away from the main terminal building, but, is connected by the KLIA Express Train. So not a problem getting in and out of the 2 terminals. Our flight from Manila landed in KLIA2 Terminal and this was where we also checked-in to our flight to Singapore using Air Asia.

You won't get lost inside the airport as there are multiple signs leading you to where you want to go, and hurray, it has english versions! We went through the airport very fast as it was already late and we wanted to at least maximize our day 1 in KL, so we weren't able to go around and explore. There was also no picture taking happening haha.

"I saw the sign, and it opened up my eyes, I saw the sign"

There are 3 ways to get to the city from the airport, well 4 if you would count riding a taxi but it's just way too expensive. Most of these transportations lead to KL Sentral, which is Malaysia's one-stop transport hub and one of the largest train station in Southeast Asia. You can opt to travel via:
  1. KLIA Express Train
  2. The most convenient way to travel to and from the airport. The travel time is around 30 minutes to KL Sentral, and it operates at a 15 minute interval during peak hours and 20 minutes during off-peak hours. The ticket costs RM44, roughly 495php each and it can be purchased online to avoid lining up to buy the tickets (although in our case, there were no lines when we got there haha). You can purchase it online here. By the way, to go to the station, just follow the yellow brick road. Kidding, just follow the signs that says "KLIA Express" it's very easy to look for it. Also, this train connects KLIA and KLIA2 as well.

  3. KLIA Transit Train
  4. It's the same as KLIA Express but it has a longer travel time, at approximately 35-40 minutes because it makes four stops along the way, namely at Bandar Tasik Selatan, Putrajaya, Cyberjaya, and Salak Tinggi. The fare to KL Sentral is the same as KLIA Express Train. This is convenient for travellers who are not heading straight to the city centre and those who wants to explore Putrajaya and the other areas.

  5. Airport Bus Shuttle
  6. This is the cheapest way to go to KL Sentral from the airport, but a much longer travel time, about an hour to reach the city. It costs RM11 (124php) for one way ticket and RM18 (202php) for return ticket.

We chose to travel via the KLIA Express Train and we bought the tickets online. I think the rate right now is at RM55 (617php) but during our time, it was only at RM44 (495php). The station is located at Level 1, again, just follow the signs leading to it. You won't get lost. Also, if you plan to take the KLIA Transit Train, it's the same station as the KLIA Express, also with the same ticket booth as well as the same website to book tickets online.

Helpful signs all around

KLIA Express Train is very clean, nice, and spacious. There are areas where you can place your bags. And the seats are very comfortable. And a huge plus, there's free wifi! The travel time was fast, and the views to see are interesting so you won't get bored at all.
