The Davao Experience: A Visit at Eden Nature Park

This is the tenth part of our 4-days-3-nights Davao Experience.

Our first stop for our city tour is the Eden Nature Park. It is located in the District of Toril which is a long way from the City Proper, approximately 40 kilometers and a 1 1/2 hour ride.

How to get to Eden Nature Park and Resort:
  1. If through public transportation - ride a jeepney with the signboard Toril and tell the driver to drop you off at the Mercury Drug Store, the way to the Eden Nature Park. From there, there are habal-habal that you can hire to bring you right to the entrance of Eden Nature Park.
  2. By private vehicle - drive towards Toril Proper passing through the McArthur Highway. Once you see the Mercury Drug Store to your right side, turn right there. Approximately 20 km from there, there is a fork road where you can turn left to Brgy. Eden which will lead you straight to the entrance of the resort.

It was a long trip, I actually didn't expect it to be that long. Anyway, Eden Nature Park and Resort is one of the most popular tourist destination in Davao both by foreign and local tourists alike. It is located at the foot of the dormant Mount Talomo, 3,000 feet above sea level. It was discovered sometime in 1971 and it used to be a logged-over area covered only by wild grasses. Today, it is an 80-hectare area with over 100,000 fully-grown pine trees and forest trees overlooking the whole of Davao City and Davao Gulf. It also has a lot of facilities ranging from hotel rooms, cottages, pools, gardens, fishing areas, greenhouses, playgrounds, etc. etc. And this is all 95% man-made, how cool is that!

Anyway, the entrance fee to the park is 200php/person including a free snack. They have guided tours around the park but it has a specific time schedule. Unfortunately for us, when we got there at 9:30am, the next tour was at 10:45am which was too long a wait for us so we decided to just explore around the park ourselves. What we didn't anticipate was how huge (and I mean, huge!) the park really was. Haha. I think, we were only able to explore around 20% of the whole park which was sad. So an advise to those planning to go here, call first to know if your arrival would coincide with their tour so as to be able to see the whole park.

This is how huge the park is!

We were only able to go to the Pasyalan Area which houses a lot of bird species and then to the cottage area which is a great spot for picture taking. You're just surrounded by a lot of trees and greenery while overlooking the City of Davao that it will leave you in awe. I wanted to just roll around the grass over and over and smell the fresh air. We also went to the Mountain Trail but only up to the Hanging Bridge Area because it was still a long way to the end of the trail.

We also saw the Deer Park which is a huge expanse of land with lots of deers inside. I was expecting a caged area but that was not the case. The deers were freely able to move around the huge field. It was really cool.

A Deer

But what we really enjoyed in Eden Nature Park is the Indiana Jones Ride. It's like a mini zipline where you would just sit down and glide along to the other side. I was scared at first but once you get the hang of it, it was really fun. I think we spent around 30-45 minutes there just riding over and over again haha. We reverted back to our childhood because of that ride.

Wheeee!

Playground Area and Amphitheater

They also have a zipline area which costs only 150php/person. What is unique about this zipline is you get the see an amazing view of Davao City. But we were not able to try it due to restricted time schedule and fear haha. But according to our driver, this is a better zipline compared to the one located in Outland Adventure because of the view.

Zipline!

Anyway, we left Eden Nature Park at around 11:00 am and went to our next destination which is the Philippine Eagle Center. It was unfortunate that we were not able to try the guided tour since there were still a lot of things to see at the park. Also, they have a lunch buffet which according to some blogs, it was worth their money.

The Davao Experience: Taps, The Breakfast Capital of Davao

This is the ninth part of our 4-days-3-nights Davao Experience.

This is the start of our Day 3 in Davao aka Our City Tour Adventure. Originally, we planned a Do-It-Yourself tour. But most of the places is accessible by taxis (which costs a lot) and some are in really far places (such as the Eagle Center and Eden Nature Park) so we decided to try a rent a car. We had no idea how hard it would be to find a Rent a Car in a city like Davao! Almost all are on the range of 2000-2500php for the whole day which does not include gas. So it was a bit steep for us. Also, some of them have different rates if you're going to Eagle Center or Eden Nature Park compared to if you would just be staying in the main city. Luckily for us, after a long search (and probably high celfone bills haha) we were able to score one which costs 1500php excluding gas, but including a driver. Our rough estimate for gas was around 1000php. So that would be a total of 2500php, which is 625php/person. Which, I guess was ok.

Before heading out to the great unknown that is the City Tour (drama haha), we first had breakfast at Taps. It is said to be the breakfast capital of Davao City and it is seen everywhere. I am a breakfast person and I love anything that has a "silog" in their name so I was really excited to try this place. We ate at their Palma Gil Branch which was just beside People's Park. I had the Lekasilog and my friend had the Tapsilog. True to the reviews, it was delicious. Better than Tapa King haha. The Tapsilog wasn't sweet (which is good because I hate sweet tapsilogs) and the Lekasilog was tasty, albeit too oily. So, again, with a happy tummy, we set off to our first destination for our City Tour which is the Eden Nature Park.

The Davao Experience: Lyndon's World's Worst Ribs and Awful Chicken

This is the eighth part of our 4-days-3-nights Davao Experience.

I forgot to mention that our 2nd day in Davao marks my birthday haha. So for dinner we decided to eat at the famous, much-talked about Lyndon's World's Worst Ribs and Awful Chicken. When we were researching places to eat on other blogs, a lot of them featured this restaurant. It caught our attention because of the name. It takes guts to name a restaurant like that and make people come in and try their food and come out feeling very very satisfied.

From SaSa Wharf we got into a jeepney (I am so sorry but I forgot what the sign board said) which costs 15 php/person. There are several branches of Lyndon's all around Davao. We accidentally ended up in their Lanang Branch which is just a walk away from SM Lanang (we were supposed to go to there JP Laurel branch and we have NO idea how we got here haha). Apparently, this was a new store and we were the only ones there.

Lyndon's World's Worst Ribs and Awful Chicken

The Interesting, Unique, and Funny Menu

We ordered 550g of the World's Worst Ribs, a quarter of the Lyla's Awful Chicken, 400g of Tadyang ni Ruby, Tasteless Pansit, and Papaitan. Yes, we were hungry. One thing you can say about the food, it's the complete opposite of the restaurant's name. The ribs is probably the best ribs I have ever tasted and rivals the one in Rack's. It has a sweet barbeque sauce (not overpoweringly sweet) and the meat is just so soft. It literally falls off of the bones. It was amazing! The chicken was also very tasty as well as the Tadyang ni Ruby (which is technically lechon kawali). The tasteless pansit is not tasteless, in fact it was so big we even had leftovers. It was brimming with vegetables and it was very yummy. The one thing we didn't like was the papaitan but the rest was superb! I would have eaten in here every night if my companions allowed it (but they didn't so..). Our total bill was 900plus php which was not bad for 4 people with huge appetite. If you are going to Davao, definitely stop by at this place and try their food. You would miss half of your life if you didn't, no kidding!

It should have been named World's Best Ribs

The Awful (but not really awful) Chicken

Tadyang ni Ruby

"Tasteless" (but super tasty) Pansit

So with a happy, bulging tummy we set off to find a coffee place. We saw one nearby named New Orleans Cafe. I ordered the Bailey's Coffee, which costs 120php, but it wasn't that good. It does taste like the alcohol Bailey's but it lacks the taste of coffee. They have a variety of food, not just deserts and coffee, but even main courses. We wanted to try their cakes but we were just too full from the ribs attacking that we did. After that we hailed a taxi to take us back to Ponce Suites for a much-deserved rest.

The Davao Experience: Fernandez Beach and Garden Resort

This is the seventh part of our 4-days-3-nights Davao Experience.

So from Kaputian Beach, we again, traveled a loooong way back to Fernandez Beach Resort. It is located in Penaplata near Penapalata Central Elementary School (also near Hagimit Falls). We planned on staying here overnight, but decided not to since the price is also a bit steep (1500php for 1 room that accommodates 2 persons).

The Way to Fernandez Beach Resort

Fernandez Beach Resort

Upon arriving there, we had to pay 50php/person for the entrance fee for a day tour (different rate applies for those staying overnight). The resort was clean and well-kept. Downside was, the beach area is small, sand is almost greyish black, and the water is not clear. Also, when we got there, it was a low tide so we did not get the chance to try out the beach. Another downside is the cottages are not for free. So with all those piling up against us, we decided to just swim at their swimming pool. Alas, another fee applies which was 70php/person. It's also not allowed to bring in foods or drinks even if you brought if from them so that really sucks. Their pool is average, nothing special. Although it has a separate kiddie pool which was a plus. They also have a restaurant which serves a variety of foods if you get hungry but the prices are a bit steep. We opted to just buy some junk food and coke, and ate it (secretly) along the pool haha pasaway.

Anyway, the experience was OK but I would have opted to stay longer at Kaputian Beach. We left the resort at around 5pm and rented a tricycle going back to Babak Wharf which costs 30php/person. We then boarded the RoRo again which took us back to Davao. Along the way, we saw the shadow of Mt. Apo and it was just amazing!

The RoRo Ride Going Back to Davao

The Shadow of Mt. Apo Towering Over Davao

And that ends our Samal Tour. A bit of advice, if you're planning to go to Samal and just have a day tour, go there early. I think it's a must to try out the Island Hopping as well as their Introductory Dive (because other blogs say that this is the cheapest dive you could get) because other than that, there's not much to do in Samal. Also, try to go to the Vanishing Island. If you're an adventure seeker, stop by Maxima Aqua Fun and try their giant slide. If you're not planning to swim at Hagimit, you could actually skip the tour there since it was nothing special. And if you're planning to swim all day at the beach, go straight to Kaputian Beach Resort or Pearl Farm (if you have money to spare) because according to the locals, those are the prettiest beaches there. I really, really regret not being able to go on the island hopping and because of that I will definitely go back there one of these days!

I Shall Return!

The Davao Experience: Kaputian Beach in Samal

This is the sixth part of our 4-days-3-nights Davao Experience.

From Hagimit Falls we decided to go straight to Kaputian Beach instead of going to Maxima Aquafun since we were really on a tight schedule (and because no one in our group wanted to try the giant slide haha). Kaputian Beach is located a looooong way from Hagimit Falls, around 30-40 minutes away. Our total habal-habal expenses for the 3 locations was 450php/motorcycle so that's 225php/person. Not bad!

Kaputian Beach is located at the southern most part of Samal Island and is just a 10-minute boat ride from Talicud Island & Isla Reta. As the name implies, it boasts of clear, blue waters and white sands. This is one of the most popular tourist spots in Samal Island and one of the most popular beaches in the whole of Davao. It is owned by the government so it has very cheap rent prices. Entrance fee to Kaputian Beach was 10php/person and you could rent cottages or a picnic deck for a very low price.

Prices in Kaputian Beach Resort

When we got there, we first had lunch at the nearby cafeteria. Sidenote, if you're planning to go there and stay there, buy some drinks and food because there are limited places to buy around the resort. We got the picnic deck for only 100php. Since we've already experienced the beaches of El Nido and Boracay, we find the beach in Kaputian as just an average beach. Although, they do have white sands but we noticed a lot of stones and dead corals all over which destroys the beauty of it. But I have to say, the blue clear water is true. If only they would just clean up the dead corals on the beach, it would probably rival the beach of El Nido. It's a good place to relax since it was very quiet and peaceful. The cottages where you could stay for an overnight is also well-kept and very worth it for the cheap price that they offer. Oh, watch out for the preserved sea cow (dugong) at the entrance which I find to be really cool haha.

We stayed only for a short while and decided to go to Fernandez Beach Resort to continue our swimming. Also, we were panicking a bit since there were no available ferries from Kaputian going back to Davao and the locals there were not sure what time the last trip of the Island City Bus Express was. So with transportation in mind, we opted to go back near Babak Wharf where the ferries are sure to return to Davao haha. By the way, there are locals there also offering Island Hopping going to Talicud Island, Isla Reta, Coral Garden, etc. We were offered 2,000php along with snorkeling gears but, sadly, we declined again due to our tight schedule. We rented a habal-habal to go to Fernandez Beach Resort which costs 75php/person.

The Samal Tour continues to Fernandez Beach Resort!

The Davao Experience: Monfort Bat Cave and Hagimit Falls

This is the fifth part of our 4-days-3-nights Davao Experience.

MONFORT BAT CAVE
For the continuation of our Samal Tour, our first stop was at Monfort Bat Cave. It is located at Barangay Tambo, Babak District which is just around 15-20 minutes from the Babak Wharf. The habal-habal ride is an adventure itself so just sit back, relax, and enjoy it.

The View from our Habal-Habal

Anyway, the Monfort Bat Cave houses approximately 1.8 million Geoffroy's Rousette Fruit Bats (Rousettus Amplexicaudatus) which is recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the biggest colony of Geoffrey's Rousette Fruit Bat in the world. It is owned by Norma Monfort and the park is approximately 23 hectares in size. This was one of the few tourist spot that I was really excited to see since I have this strange fascination with animals.

Welcome to Monfort Bat Cave

Guinness World Record Holder. Cool!

There is an entrance fee of 100php/person which I think is a bit steep, but it's for the environment. We had a tour guide to accompany us. You would not be able to go inside the cave itself. There are 5 openings which are surrounded by bamboo rails where you could peek in to see the bats. According to the tour guide, these openings were created by Japanese bomb during the World War II. It was actually pretty cool in a creepy and smelly way haha. The guide also told us that at the beginning of night time, these bats actually goes out of the cave in a huge whirlwind like flying movement which I think would be really cool to see (sayang!)

Millions of Bats!

Bats, Bats, and More Bats!

By the way, you will be able to see the Vanishing Island from here. They also have rentable boats to go there but you have to reserve in advance.

HAGIMIT FALLS
Our next stop was at Hagimit Falls which was a long way from the bat cave. It is located in PeƱaplata District in the Island Garden City of Samal. It consists of several small waterfalls and is surrounded by unspoiled nature and trees, mostly of the hagimit trees (Ficus minahassae). This is where the waterfall got its name.

Hagimit Falls

The Entrance

The Standard Habal-Habal Rate from Hagimit to Other Locations

The entrance fee was 40php/person with an additional 5php/person for the environmental fee. To reach the falls, you have to go down a flight of stairs, which was already tiring but add the thought of going back up those flight of stairs and it would give you 2nd thoughts on going down haha. But, we ventured on anyway. And it was worth it. The place was beautiful, the water was clear, and the falls were magnificent. They were small but still really breathtaking. Unfortunately, we were not able to swim and stay since we were on a tight schedule so we just had some picture taking and off we go. But if you do plan on staying, you can use the cottages all around the falls which is for free, and there are also some cottages inside the resort located there which you could rent for a fee. Bring your own food by the way since we didn't see any stores there.
