Experiencing Camarines Sur: Exploring Siruma and Return Trip to Manila

This is another TBT from our previous travel. This is our Naga Experience last June 27-June 30, 2012 with a side trip to Siruma, a coastal island and a lesser known place in Camarines Sur but still with so many things to offer.

This is the third part of our 3-days-2-nights Exploring Camarines Sur.

Our day started bright and early so that we could explore more of Siruma. We hiked towards the cell site of Globe/Smart which is located in a mini mountain top which has an amazing view of Siruma. It’s not a hard hike since some of the pathways are paved already but it’s a bit tiring though. This is the place where we usually jog during the morning when I’m on duty. If you’re going to Siruma, don’t forget to visit this mountain top because the views are just amazing!

Some Roads going up are already cemented

Some are still rough roads

After that we went back to the hospital to fix our things and then headed off to another known beach called Amuris (this is Siruma backwards haha). Amuris Beach is the better beach to go swimming compared to Magayon Beach. Although, it's nowhere near the beauty of the beaches found in Palawan or Bohol, Amuris Beach still has a charm of its own. The waters are very clear during low tides although the sands are a bit grayish to brownish in color. There are some dead corals all around but not that much that it would hurt your feet while walking around. Best thing about this beach is that it's for free! You could just get a hammock, tie it to any branches of the many trees found there, and just hang out and whatever. No one would pay any attention to you. Another plus is when you go swimming during the morning, you could chance upon fishermen selling their goodies, ranging from fishes (lapu-lapu, etc) to shrimps, to crabs, to squids. And these are all very, very cheap and very fresh! This is the place where I literally, was able to taste a squid that was just 5 minutes ago alive. And it was yummy!

After the beach hopping, we headed off to a barangay called Pamintan to celebrate the town fiesta of the place. Provincial fiestas are fun! There are so many foods that you would be literally full of foods when you go home. The people are very friendly and the atmosphere is just so festive and joyous. We were able to stuff ourselves with so many foods there and then bought some dried fish to bring home to Manila. Pamintan is best known for their dried fishes (tuyo). Dried fish (Abo) is a must to buy when visiting Siruma. A MUST.

Anyway, at around 6pm, we boarded the jeepney going back to Manila. Again, like the trip going here, there is only one trip going back to Naga which is at around 6-7pm. It lasts for around 4-5 hours. We arrived at Naga at around 11:30 pm, checked in at CBD hotel which is just in front of CBD terminal and SM Naga. And had a good night sleep with electricity, finally.

Our flight to Manila was scheduled at 10:45 am the following day. What I like about CBD Hotel is that they have a free shuttle ride going to the airport which is very convenient.

So that ends our Camarines Sur adventure. Cam Sur is best known for its beaches most especially those found at Caramoan but what other tourists should watch out for are the beaches in the lesser known places such as Siruma. These are the virgin, un-touch, un-tainted beaches that is just spectacular to go to. It’s a bit of a rural life but that’s the fun of it, going back to the basics such as cooking foods using charcoal, hanging outside watching the stars and fireflies because there’s no electricity, swimming in free beaches and having a bonfire. If you want to just relax and get away from the urban life of Manila, go to these kinds of places. It will detoxify you and just make you appreciate nature more.

Siruma has so much more to offer so watch out for more of my write-ups regarding this exotic place.

Experiencing Camarines Sur: Trip to Siruma

This is another TBT from our previous travel. This is our Naga Experience last June 27-June 30, 2012 with a side trip to Siruma, a coastal island and a lesser known place in Camarines Sur but still with so many things to offer.

This is the second part of our 3-days-2-nights Exploring Camarines Sur.

Originally, we planned on either going to Caramoan or Legaspi City. But we were a bit short on time and J wanted to experience Siruma also. What/where is Siruma?

Back story of how I found out about Siruma (again, I would be posting full details about this next time):
Last March 2012, I (together with another friend of mine) was lucky enough to score a good-paying job at a provincial hospital located at Siruma, Camarines Sur. Grabbing the chance, we went for the interview at CWC in Naga (since it offered free accommodation and we really wanted to try the wakeboarding) and accepted the job. So, that’s how I found myself weeks after in a secluded, far-off coastal place, 5-6 hours away from Naga (depending on the road condition) in a place known as Siruma.

Siruma is that little spot on the upper area

Anyway, Siruma is a fourth class municipality in the province of Camarines Sur, which has a population of approximately 17,050 people (2010 census). It has 22 barangays. You can go here either via land or via sea.

How to go to Siruma via Land Travel:
  • Ride a bus going to Naga City.
  • Alight at the CBD Bus Terminal in Naga
  • Hire a tricycle to take you to Queborac Terminal (the terminal where the jeepneys going to Siruma/Tinambac are located). This is just 8php/person, if you’re just one, pay 16php.
  • Locate the jeepneys going to Siruma. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: there is only one travel time to Siruma from Queborac and that is at around 9-10 am. This is again, dependent on the weather and road conditions.
  • Prepare for a bumpy, adventurous ride!

How to go to Siruma via Sea Travel:
  • Ride a bus going to Naga City.
  • Alight at the CBD Bus Terminal in Naga
  • Hire a tricycle to take you to Queborac Terminal (the terminal where the jeepneys going to Siruma/Tinambac are located). This is just 8php/person, if you’re just one, pay 16php.
  • Locate the jeepneys going to Tinambac. Tell the driver to drop you off at the pier station in Tinambac.
  • Hire a boat at TInambac Port. IMPORTANT TO NOTE: there are no regular boats going to/coming from Siruma so if you are going to take this route, most likely you will be hiring a private boat which costs around 500-1000php. This is again dependent on the weather conditions. If it’s rainy, do not take this route since the boats are very small (almost like a fishing boat) and the travel time takes around 2 hours.

We opted to go via land travel since I’m already used to traveling via this route. Travelling to Siruma is an adventure itself. Half of the roads going there do not have any pavement. And since you’re just riding in a jeepney, expect it to be very very bumpy. Sometimes, if it’s raining, the pathway would be soft and muddy and the jeepneys would sometimes be stuck. So, travel time is really dependent on the weather conditions haha. Luckily for us, at that time it rained a bit but not enough to cause really deep muds on the roads so our travel time was just approximately 5 hours. We left Naga at around 11:00 am and arrived at Siruma at around 5:00-5:30 pm.

The Road Going to Siruma

Unfortunately, when we arrived there, there were no electricity haha. We stayed at the provincial hospital since one of our friends is on duty there. We did get to explore one of the many beaches found in Siruma, the Magayon (in English, beautiful) Beach. We did not swim though but just walked around and take pictures.

The Hospital Where We Stayed In

After that, we went back to the hospital and called it a day (the electricity went back at around 4am haha).

Next up, the day after in Siruma, Camarines Sur.

This is another TBT from our previous travel. This is our Naga Experience last June 27-June 30, 2012 with a side trip to Siruma, a coastal island and a lesser known place in Camarines Sur but still with so many things to offer.

This is the first part of our 3-days-2-nights Exploring Camarines Sur.

We got a promo fare via Cebu Pacific for this trip. The plane was supposed to leave at 12:15pm, but again, tradition has it that if it’s Cebu Pacific, it will be late. We were delayed about an hour. Anyway, the trip from Manila to Naga is very short, approximately 45 minutes.

Boarding Our Flight

J won one of the CebuPac Games!

Naga Airport

Naga is found in the province of Camarines Sur near the center of the Bicol Regions. It is 377km southeast of Manila. It is home to the largest Marian pilgrimage in Asia which is the Our Lady of Penafrancia. It is also most known for being the Wakeboarding Capital of the Philippines. Since it's quite near Manila, you can opt to go here via bus, terminals located along Alabang, Pasay, or Cubao. Travel time would be approximately 6-8 hours at night and 12 hours during the day. You could also take a flight going to Naga which is the faster way.

When we got to Naga, a van from Camsur Watersports Complex was waiting for us to pick us up and bring us to the hotel. We rented the Villa Del Rey Containers which was 1,200php/night. It was a fun accommodation because it looked like cargo containers hehe but the inside was nice, a bit small but just right for 2 persons. And it’s near the wakeboarding area so that’s a plus but it is a bit far though from the lobby. There are other rooms available inside the CWC, just check out their website.

Funky Looking Accomodations

Other Accomodations

After depositing our bags to the room, we headed straight on to the CWC clubhouse for our late lunch. We ordered the Laing Pizza and the Potato-Bacon-Bowl thingy (I forgot the exact name). I have tried the Laing Pizza before (my first time here in CWC, which I will also be documenting next time) and it was just superb that I had to force J to order it as well. And it still has not failed. It was spicy and very flavorful. The Potato bowl was also very nice.

Potato-Bacon-Bowl Thingy

After the scrumptious meal, we headed on to try the CWC wakeboarding. Again, I’ve already tried it before but I was still nervous for my 2nd time. We tried the Winch Park, which was the beginner’s lake and just paid for an hourly rate. We got lucky because there were only a few people at the beginner’s lake and the kuyas were very kind and let us ride even though our hourly rate was up. kudos! You can find the different rates here.

Wakeboarding Lake (Not the Beginner's Lake)

The View Surrounding the Wakeboarding Area

J's Wakeboarding Attempt

Quite Successful. Clap for you!

My Wakeboarding Attempt

Not Successful at all haha.

The wakeboarding experience was fun! It was very challenging and very hard. I thought all you have to do is just hold on to the rope and balance, but no! You have to think of the position of your hands, your feet, your body, basically everything. I was not able to cross the whole beginner’s lake (and I also wasn’t able to cross my first time lol). It was very tiring especially the part where you would fall in the middle of the lake and you would have to swim all over to the starting line. I think that’s where our body aches came from, not the wakeboarding itself haha. After the wakeboarding, we headed back to the clubhouse to eat and then had a refreshing night swimming in their pool.

And that’s it for our first day in Naga! Next up, our trip going to Siruma!

Conquering Northern Mindanao: Summary of our Trip

This is the sixteenth part of our 4-days-3-nights Conquering Northern Mindanao trip.

Our flight back to Manila from CDO is at 10:00 am so it’s not really considered a whole day for us there. We had an early morning start and had a cramming moment to buy pasalubongs (souvenirs) at the market. Lanzones in Camiguin is cheaper and yummier compared to that in CDO. The pastels are just the same between Camiguin and CDO. Anyway, just hire a motorella to take you to the market and just go around to look for pasalubongs and souvenirs.

CDO Airport

We hired a taxi going to the airport since it was a bit far away from Victoria Suites. CDO airport is a bit small but it’s very clean. The flight back to Manila was uneventful, except for the time that J won a bag in the Cebu Pacific game they had haha.

And that concludes our Northern Mindanao Trip. For 5 days and 4 nights, we were able to go to Camiguin, try the white water rafting in CDO, go around CDO, ride the dual zipline in Dahilayan in Bukidnon, and visit the 2 popular waterfalls in Iligan City. Not bad for a first timer in Mindanao. Our expenses report, unfortunately, got erased so I have no record of it now. But we spent around 18,000php all in all for the 2 of us so that’s roughly 9,000php + each person. Which is not bad at all!

Conquering Northern Mindanao: Tinago Falls

This is the fifteenth part of our 4-days-3-nights Conquering Northern Mindanao trip.

Tinago is a Filipino term meaning “hidden” and that’s exactly what the waterfall is because it is hidden in a deep ravine. You have to descend around 300+ steps, some cemented, some rough roads, before arriving at the falls.

After Maria Cristina Falls, we scrambled on to go to Tinago Falls. To get to there, just walk back to the main highway where the driver dropped you off, get a jeepney again going to Buru-un and tell the driver again to drop you off at the street going to Tinago Falls. Once there, there are a lot of habal-habal for rent and it is advisable to get one because it’s very far away. We were able to hire one motorcycle for 30php/person, so that’s 60php going to the falls which was worth it. Look for Kuya Joven when going there.

Anyway, when we arrived at Tinago Falls, there were no more tourists in the place since it was already around 4:30 pm. Entrance fee depends on you, they accept donation of any amount. 2 guides joined us going down and at first we were hesitant to get their services since we didn’t want to pay, but it is VERY MUCH advisable to get a guide because it is a long path going down and you might get lost because the trail sometimes disappears. Unfortunately, when we got to the falls, it was nearing night time so we were not able to appreciate the so-called “blue waters” of the falls. It also started raining a bit making the surroundings darker. But nevertheless, Tinago Falls is still very very beautiful and it was worth it to go there. We only stayed for around 30minutes because we didn’t want to trek back in the dark.

Tinago Falls

Even in the dark, Tinago Falls is still beautiful

Tinago Falls

TIP FOR GOING TO TINAGO FALLS: go there either early in the morning or early in the afternoon to fully appreciate the falls!

We hired a habal-habal going back again to the highway for 60php. At the highway, ride a jeepney going back to the market and just tell the driver to drop you off at any place where there are jeepneys going to the bus terminal that has buses going to CDO. Ride that jeep and then go down to the bus terminals and ride a bus going back to CDO.

We arrived at CDO at around 7pm and we were so exhausted at that time. We had dinner at Limketkai Center again since we were a bit addicted to Missy Bon Bon at that time. And then we called it a night.

Addicted to Missy Bon Bon

So, was it worth it to do a side trip to Iligan City? DEFINITELY! The Maria Cristina falls alone is worth the hours of travel! But it is more advisable to do a day tour in Iligan City instead of just a half day tour so that you could appreciate the waterfalls more and you won’t be rushing around trying to get there before dark. Also, the people in Iligan City are very friendly so don’t hesitate to ask around for directions.

Conquering Northern Mindanao: Maria Cristina Falls

This is the fourteenth part of our 4-days-3-nights Conquering Northern Mindanao trip.

Maria Cristina Falls is also called the “twin falls”. The flow of the water downwards is separated by a rock making it look like there are 2 waterfalls emerging into one. This 320-feet waterfall is also the primary source of electric power for the city.

HOW TO GET TO MARIA CRISTINA FALLS:
From the bus terminal, ride a jeepney going to the market and tell the driver to drop you off at the place where jeepneys going to Buru-un are found. That jeepney will be passing in front of the National Power Corporation where the Ma. Cristina Falls is located. Just tell the driver to drop you there. You will be dropped off at a bridge and from there you can walk towards the entrance of NPC. Ignore the habal-habal (motorcycle) drivers offering you a ride going to the entrance because it is just very near.

National Power Corporation

Welcome to Maria Cristina Falls

Once we got there, we paid the entrance fee of 35php/person and then waited for the shuttle van to take us to the falls. It was a bit of a long wait and we were worried about the time since we planned on going to Tinago Falls afterwards. But anyway, the van arrived just in time so we ventured on.

The Shuttle Going to Maria Cristina Falls

The one thing that we could say about Maria Cristina Falls is that the word “majestic” isn’t enough to describe it. It’s such a “macho-looking” falls for such a sexy name haha. We were just staring at it with our mouths open wide because it was so beautiful. We saw the falls in all its glory including the two cascading waters. Even from a distance you can feel its powers and feel some mists in the air, that’s how strong the falls were. It was such a great experience to see a place that we studied during our elementary years. I was actually teary-eyed a bit when I saw it haha.

Maria Cristina Falls at a Distance

The Falls connecting to the River

Just Amazing

Majestic Maria Cristina Falls

We stayed there for around 30 minutes and then decided to go back so that we could still go to Tinago Falls.

Next: Tinago Falls

Conquering Northern Mindanao: How To Get To Iligan City

This is the thirteenth part of our 4-days-3-nights Conquering Northern Mindanao trip.

Our trip to Iligan City wasn’t originally planned but since we had time to spare after our Bukidnon trip, we decided to just go ahead and go there.

Iligan City is popularly known as the “City of Majestic Waterfalls”. As the name implies, it houses 23 waterfalls within the city, most popular of which is the Ma. Cristina Falls. It is also the primary source of electric power of the city.

Other waterfalls found in Iligan are the ff:
  • Abaga Falls
  • Bridal Veil Falls
  • Dalipuga Falls
  • Digkianlao Falls
  • Dodiongan Falls
  • Gata Falls
  • Guimbalolan Fall
  • Hindang Falls
  • Ikog Falls
  • Kalisaon Falls
  • Kalubihon Falls
  • Kamadahan Falls
  • Kibalang Falls
  • Languyon Falls
  • Langilanon Falls
  • Limunsudan Falls
  • Linanot Falls
  • Lumbatin Falls
  • Malaigang Falls
  • Malapacan Fall
  • Malinao Falls
  • Maria Cristina Falls
  • Mimbalut Falls
  • Pampam Falls
  • Pindarangahan Falls
  • Rogongon Falls
  • Sikyop Falls
  • Tinago Falls

So from Bukidnon, we rode a van going back to Agora Terminal in CDO. We arrived at CDO around 1:30 pm, bought Jollibee take-out food, and headed straight to ride a jeepney going to Bulua Bus Terminal. At the terminal, find the bus going straight to Iligan City. Fare was 145php/person and the trip lasted around 1 ½ hours. Depart at the last stop of the bus which is another terminal and there you go, you're in Iligan City already!

Up next, going to Maria Cristina Falls!

Conquering Northern Mindanao: Eating Fresh Pineapples in Bukidnon

This is the twelfth part of our 4-days-3-nights Conquering Northern Mindanao trip.

After the exhilarating adventure at Dahilayan, we again rode the habal-habal to go back. But Kuya Bibot has a surprise in store for us. We stopped over at their house and we noticed him getting a knife. We were wondering why and then suddenly he turned towards the pineapple plantation. The knife was for cutting open a pineapple haha! We don’t know if this is legally allowed but Kuya Bibot just sauntered on, took a pineapple, and cut it open for us to have a taste. It was one of the sweetest pineapples I have ever tasted. It was such a unique experience to eat a pineapple in the middle of a pineapple field while looking around to see if someone would be catching us because of what we’re doing.

Eating Pineapple in the middle of a Pineapple Plantation

Fresh Pineapples!

The weather in Bukidnon is very ideal for cultivation of pineapples (moderate dry season with average rainfall). Because of this Del Monte has a plantation placed there and is considered as the biggest pineapple plantation in the Far East. There are literally thousands of pineapples everywhere. The air is cool despite being sunny and it was such an enjoyable experience.

Next up, our travel to Iligan City.
